Kalabia Floating Marine Conservation Education Program

The MV Kalabia (named after the endemic walking shark in Raja Ampat), arrived in Raja Ampat , Indonesia, in February 2008. The Kalabia is a 34m tuna long-liner that was purchased in a classic “fisheries buyout” (removing a vessel from the tuna fleet and refitting it for a new function, which in this case is marine conservation education). The purchase and refit was funded by Conservation International. Education materials were supported by Mark Erdmann’s Pew Marine Fellowship.
