Bras environnementaliste de Pew Charitable Trusts, le Pew Environment Group a lancé le projet Global Ocean Legacy dans le but de protéger et de conserver certains des écosystèmes marins les plus importants et les plus vierges du monde grâce à la mise en place de très grandes réserves maritimes hautement protégées dites « no-take » (c’est-à-dire où toute activité extractive est interdite).
