Advanced Biofuels: Key to Military Energy Security

The Department of Defense is the world’s largest consumer of liquid fuels (more than 375,000 barrels of oil per day). Last year alone, the military’s energy bill was $17 billion and over the last two years, the Pentagon has experienced $5.6 billion in unanticipated fuel costs–an expense that impacts the readiness budget. To tackle its energy consumption in order to save lives and reduce costs, Defense Department and its service branches have adopted some of the most aggressive renewable energy goals in the country–including testing advanced biofuels. The Pentagon’s clean energy initiatives will help reduce dependence on foreign oil, encourage the commercialization of advanced biofuels and strengthen our national security.
