Leading marine scientists from around the nation have expressed concern at the adequacy of the Federal Government's proposed marine sanctuaries off WA and are calling for a rethink of the plan.
On the eve of the national conference of the Australian Marine Science Association this week, the scientists are urging Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke to put a more comprehensive network of marine sanctuaries in place. Chief among the scientists' concerns is the need for better protection for the Perth Canyon, the Abrolhos and the waters off Albany.
Led by Professor Hugh Possingham, from the University of Queensland, the scientists say the evidence for the benefits of sanctuaries is overwhelming but the urgings of the scientific community have been ignored in the draft marine sanctuaries plan.
