Ten of the western United States' best-known national parks and monuments are being jeopardized by a dramatic increase in gold, uranium and other hardrock claims filed near the scenic sites, the Pew Environmental Group reported today.


Among those listed are Dinosaur National Monument in western Colorado along the Colorado-Utah border; the Gila National Forest in southwestern New Mexico, Mount Rushmore National Monument, Canyonlands and Arches National Parks in eastern Utah, Grand Canyon National Park and Yosemite National Park.
