The federal government should finalise its plans for new marine sanctuary areas before allowing further oil drilling off southern Australia, an environmental group says.
A national coalition of 11 environment groups, Save Our Marine Life, has warned the federal government risks breaking its election commitment to protect marine life in a network of new marine parks.

Spokeswoman Michelle Grady, from the Pew Environment Group, said the approvals for oil drilling will prevent new sanctuary areas being put in place.
"The federal government made an election commitment to establish a comprehensive network of marine protected areas, but this decision puts that promise in doubt, she said.
