Federal regulators on Tuesday approved catch limits for numerous species of fish caught off the Southeast coast from North Carolina to Florida.

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, which regulates fishing off the coast between three miles and 200 miles offshore, approved catch limits for fish including king mackerel, grouper and others, said Kim Iverson, a spokeswoman for the council based in Charleston.

In all, eight councils are trying to devise rules to end overfishing. Most cases involve catch limits.

Holly Binns, director of the Pew Environment Group's Southeast Fish Conservation Campaign, applauded the limits approved Tuesday.

"The council has taken a forward-looking approach that allows managers to set scientifically sound fishing limits now before species suffer population declines," Binns said in a statement.
