Protecting special places in the sea.
As overfishing takes its toll on fish populations around the world, the vulnerability of our waters comes into focus. The Blue Halo would demonstrate Bermuda’s commitment to addressing the global problem of illegal fishing and provide us with the necessary tools to enforce a no-fishing zone. At the same time, turning the outer parts of our EEZ into a world-class marine sanctuary would actually benefit our fishermen.More
In April, Bermuda Blue Halo held its first writing contest. Children from all over the island submitted entries, making the task of selecting the winners rather difficult for the judges. Our oceans, which cover about 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, serve humanity by supplying food, oxygen, life, a means of transportation, adventure, beauty, and spiritual balm. Yet they are under significant stress from human activity.More
Jim Toomey, creator of the nationally syndicated daily comic strip Sherman’s Lagoon, is a believer – in Bermuda’s Blue Halo, that is. In a new video, Jim and his underwater critters add their support to Pew Environment Group’s Global Ocean Legacy Bermuda Blue Halo initiative, which proposes the designation of a highly protected marine reserve in the waters between Bermuda’s local fishing area and its 200-mile exclusive economic zone boundary.More
Love stories—tales of overcoming adversity and following your heart—often inspire and impress. The epic story of the love life (or breeding cycle) of American eels does just that, as related in a recent Associated Press article.More
Nearly the size of the continental U.S., the Sargasso Sea was named after Sargassum. Some of the marine species relying on this habitat have evolved unique shapes and color patterns that camouflage them among the plants. The Sargasso Sea is set off from the surrounding Atlantic by four ocean currents—some of the strongest in the world.More

Global Ocean Legacy has prepared a Science Statement that endorses the concept of designating large ocean reserves. Our goal is to demonstrate to policy makers that marine scientists around the world are supportive of bolder action to designate very large marine reserves that can serve as reference sites for research and as protected “arks” for diminishing populations of at-risk marine species. Please join with other senior scientists and marine specialists in endorsing this statement of support for large no-take marine reserves.More
