The Campaign for America’s Wilderness is a long-term effort of Pew to work with local partner groups:
- To secure new legislatively-protected designations for special areas on federal public lands across the country as a part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
- To secure legislative or administrative protection for other ecologically important areas that don’t qualify as wilderness, national monuments, national conservation areas or national recreation areas.
- To secure enhanced protection for critical ecological gems in Alaska on Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management holdings.
Today, the campaign is actively involved in nearly a dozen separate wilderness bills before Congress, which together would add another one and a half million acres to the National Wilderness Preservation System. We are also working with state and local partners across the country to build community support and raise visibility for another 30 wilderness campaigns.
